Vernacular Style Pondside Home - Woodville, VA

Building Footprint: 2,700 sqft

Scope of Work: New vernacular-style home that’s both sustainable and energy efficient. Integrate a reclaimed log cabin and repurpose client’s existing cabin as a studio – composing a modern cluster of buildings grounded in the sloped pondside setting.

The house exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate modest square footage into a richly layered living experience. Rather than maximizing size, the project emphasizes material quality, natural light, and spatial efficiency. Generous views and solar exposure are balanced with careful detailing to support energy efficiency and passive comfort. The structure utilizes a high-performance geothermal heating and cooling system, a graywater irrigation system, floor radiant heating, and a tankless hot water heater.

The project incorporates locally sourced poplar ship-lapped walls in lieu of gypsum. One of the project’s most distinctive features is the seamless incorporation of an antique reclaimed log cabin. Its historic textures and proportions converse fluently with the new construction, establishing a dialogue between past and present.
