Completion: 2022

Building Footprint: 1,224 sqft + 172 sqft Balcony

Scope of Work: Renovation, remodeling and addition to an existing two-story barn into an accesory residential space. Work on the existing building included a new slab-on-grade, insulated wall and floor envelope. The additions provided an expanded footprint, new balcony and extended courtyard.

The neglected two-story barn stood on a 10.5-acre agricultural property in Taneytown, Maryland. Originally built in 1900 and no longer serving its agricultural function, the owner saw the opportunity to transform the aging structiure into a modern accessory residential space. The design preserves its original small barn character and opens up views to the picturesque surroundings.

To meet contemporary residential and energy standards, the design added a new highly insulated building envelope. The renovated exterior combines board and batten siding, energy efficient windows and metal roofing. Repair, replacement and reinforcement of the original interior timber members allowed the interior structure to remain exposed and celebrated.
