New Home in Historic District - Scanlon, MD
Building Footprint: 950 sqft
Scope of Work: New house construction in a Historic District
Awards: 2007 Montgomery County Award for Historic Preservation for Excellence in New Constructin in a Historic District Market Street, Brookeville
The new house and its outbuildings have helped reintroduce a small cluster of buildings to the historic site, while complying with the original town plat and complimenting the adjacent structures with its small footprint (just under 1,000 square feet). Because of its location relative to these historic land marks, the structure was designed sensitively and subjected to stringent review by the Brookeville Planning Commission and the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission.
It is designed in a simple, vernacular style with some Craftsman-like elements. Such elements were useful in making a large modern home for a growing family, while still respecting the local historic scale and massing. For example, the 4-bedroom house makes use of the significant grade change on the property with its 2-story facade facing the Madison House and its 3-story rear facade facing protected parkland. Using brackets, bands, dormers and overhanging gables, the rear elevation was effectively staggered down to parallel this grade change. Much of the finish work including cabinets and trims was carried out by the owners themselves.
