The Prevention of Blindness Headquarters is a 7,180-square-foot steel and wood frame office building. The historic preservation project involved the analysis and documentation of this three-story building’s history. It was originally built in the early 1800s with several additions made during the 1950s.
Review by DCHPO and the Capitol Hill Association was required. Therefore, INTECaec had to perform selective demolition and investigation. It was discovered that removal of the 1950s additions and roofs would be allowed.
The front offices and façade of the structure would have to remain, and that portion could not gain any additional height. The new addition to three-quarters of the building’s rear had to be carefully designed to meet height and size restrictions.
